5 Websites to Help Navigate Autism

December 2, 2013

We are always asked what did we do when we first learned that Zak had Autism.  First, we cried – a lot!  Then, we researched. We spent time at the library and some time talking to parents but, and as most of you have come to learn, there is something out there called the internet!  We spent hours and late nights researching sometimes till we fell asleep at the desk!  Truthfully, I have no idea what I would do before the internet was around.  No wonder my parents are so afraid of it.  It is magic and evil!

Of course, many of you go to the internet to research and I am sure you find it a daunting task.  So much is out there now that who do you trust to give you the correct information to help your child.  Well, here are 5 websites that we relied on for helping Zak.

1.  Autism Speaks – It was the first place we went to and was very helpful.  There is good information on the site and the 100 Day Plan is very helpful.  I cautioned putting them on the list as I am not a fan of their political agenda and I am not sure they really have our children in mind but there is a lot of useful information on the site.

2.  Generation Rescue – Say what you will about Jenny McCarthy, she is an advocate and wants what is best for our kids.  I am not a fan of her pulpit pounding but the site is well managed and does give great information.  For what it is worth, her book(s) were the first we read.  Also, we are believers in the former DAN protocol and believe that diet has made a huge difference in Zak’s recovery.

3.  My Autism Team – Came later in our journey but when you need support from others and not just family and friends, this is a great site just to know there are others out there and they need support as well.

4.  Parent Coaching for Autism – I needed help to figure out how I was going to be a parent of a child with Autism.  This site helped me.

5.  Autism Now – Great resource and still one we use nearly everyday for information and news.

This, obviously, is a very short list of sites but were a good resource for us.  Let us know what you think and if you have suggestions for others, drop us a message and we will add it.
