Mother’s Day…Why we are blessed…

May 13, 2012

I used to say “how lucky I am” or that “I am lucky to have met ZAKSMOM” but I am reminded every day that I am  not lucky – I am blessed.  Truthfully, it took a lot of work to get her agree to even go on a date with me (I asked and her excuse was it was too far of a drive.  OUCH!) let alone spend the last 12 years with me so I am leaning toward the fact that something higher intervened.  Lots of ups and downs in this journey yet she is still here.

Frankly, our whole family is blessed.  I am blessed that I have someone that reminds me everyday to keep moving forward and that there is hope.  Our daughter is blessed with a mom who can understand the mind of a 6 year old girl when I have no clue what the heck she is even saying.  And of course, Zak is blessed.  Blessed by a mother, and to borrow a phrase by Jenny McCarthy, a WARRIOR MOTHER.  You see, she never gives up.  She never is done advocating for Zak and will do anything and everything to ensure success.  Yes, most mothers love their children and most would do anything for them.  ZAKSMOM has to.  Don’t get me wrong – we could have it much worse but she has never said “Woe is me” or “why did this happen to us.”  She just keeps working to help her son, and all of us, be better.

She has had a tough year this 2012.  So many things have happened that would make most people curl up into a ball and just sob for days.  She certainly could with all that has happened but she continues to fight.  Sure, she has cried and sure she has felt sadness but like we tell Zak, it is not that you had a meltdown, it is how you handle it and how you recover from it and she always gets up!  Her strength makes me have more hope and she reminds me daily that we are here for a reason; to raise our children to be the best they can be despite any obstacle or setback.

And, she puts up with a lot!  Mostly me and my general craziness.  She is essentially raising two boys with autism (she diagnosed me years ago) and the 6 year old girl who is one hot mess!  I do not know how she does it but she remains on her feet and remains strong.  It is a testament to how she was raised and how great of a job her parents did.  Is she perfect?  Hell no!  I have a list of petty sh@$ that drives me nuts on a daily basis but who doesn’t have those little annoyances that drive our significant other crazy.  I am sure her list of my crap is much longer than hers).  However, her imperfection is perfect for me and perfect for our family and we are so thankful that we have her.

Blessed.  That is all I can say.  I know it is Mother’s Day and we are supposed to say nice things but it is not just lip service.  She is amazing and we are blessed AND lucky to have her!  Thank you honey for being the best mom and wife and family could hope for.  We love you!

One Blessed Family
